WordPress vs TextPattern

As recommended by Joni Mueller on his her comments on my previous post “my first encounter with wordpress” I will look into Textpattern applicability for business website. There have been a lot written for comparing the 2 like TXP Magazine article, a journal in openswitch “why I love textpattern”, wordpress vs textpattern blog… however, I am attempting only to compare whether wordpress or textpattern would be more suitable for our business website needs. Some points of comparison:

  1. Which one is more applicable for business website
  2. Which one have better SEO
  3. Which one have better support for ecommerce website needs like shopping cart, payment system
  4. Which one will survive longer

Some pros and cons of both:

Pros of WordPress- very easy to use, lots of plug-ins, can be installed for intranet

Cons of WordPress – spam, endless upgrades to fix bugs

Pros of Textpattern – no spam, granular control, more efficient, post articles anywhere,

Cons – less support, shrinking community?

Looking through a lot of site comparing the 2, I saw this article by blue flavor on “Choosing a Content Management System for your Web Project” which is quite true. In it, there’s also some mention of EE – Expression Engine … after a look at their website, I think Textpattern can wait. Some features I’m looking for for collaboration is there in Expression Engine like knowledge base, wiki and forum…

First, I’m a “she” not a “he” :-) .. and I too am looking for that perfect CMS. I too have shelled out the $100 for EE and another $10 for the forum module. I have yet to do anything with either of them. No one CMS is perfect for every situation so far. Each has limitations, as you have pointed out here. But I’m convinced my “perfect answer” is out there somewhere. :)

    Sorry Joni… I’ve made the correction… :)

I’ve been searching and I consider myself more than average in hunting down information… so I really hope you are right that the “perfect answer” is out there… Still trying to find out… :)

    Can Plone be the one?

I quess for me the choice will have to be TXP, since WP simply won’t install. I am on external hosting which allows limited tweaking of php.ini, but they could not locate the problem. And I don’t think I’m going to pay $100 for a system when there are open source alternatives.

I looked at several CMS packages (drupal, wordpress, joomla, etc.) before I settled on Textpattern. I’ve been using it for about a year and I love it. Set up a site for a friend of mine and she is also very happy with it. Some knowledge of HTML and CSS is helpful. As for SEO, you can customize page titles, description and keywords with a couple of plugins. Good luck!
